Second International Malbec Days, November 27-29, 2008 in Lujan de Cuyo

Cahors is the guest of honor of Argentina for the Second International Malbec Days, taking place in Lujan de Cuyo on November 27 to 29.

Cahors professional and political leaders will be the guests of the "Municipalidad" of Lujan de Cuyo:

  • Alain JANICOT, President of the UIVC (Professional Union of Cahors Vintners)
  • Executives : Jérémy ARNAUD, Marketing Director and Mylène DOUX, enologist
  • Merchants : Olivier PIERON (RVSO), Pierre GOUTTENOIRE (Maison RIGAL), Didier PELVILLAIN (PELVILLAIN), Jacques TRANIER (VINOVALIES, including the Côtes d'Olt), Bertrand VIGOUROUX (VIGOUROUX Group)
  • Producers : Pascal VERHAEGHE (Château du CEDRE), Philippe LEJEUNE (Château CHAMBERT), Martial GUIETTE and his wife (Château les ROQUES DE CANA)
  • Special Guests : Gilles MARRE (President of the BONNES TABLES DU LOT, Hervé ROMAT (enologist, Technical Manager of CDV)
  • Journalists: Laurent BENAYOUN and Bernard BURTSCHY
  • Local politicians: Jean-Marc VAYSSOUZE (Mayor of Cahors), Bernard CHOULET (Vice-President of General Council of the department, in charge of Agriculture).

    • Here is the program:

    From 6:00 to 10:00pm everyday: professional tastings of Cahors and Lujan de Cuyo wines; VIP dinners and cooking contests under the supervision of a French chef from the Cahors area.

  • November 27: professional meetings between French and Argentinian companies ; bodegas visits.
  • November 28: meetings between French and Argentinian scientists to discuss "terroirs" and varietals.
  • November 29: discussions and brainstormings on how to protect and give more value to the malbec varietal; common marketing strategies. Bodegas' visits.
  • November 30: after so much work, a little break with a folk event.

    Bubble Brothers

    Julian Alubaidy works for Irish wine merchants Bubble Brothers, trying to keep customers and suppliers happy, and making sure that the wine doesn't run out. These various duties ensure that there's never a shortage of material for the company's blog.

    The wines of Clos Triguedina in Cahors have featured on the list since early days, and have subsequently been joined by Malbecs from the Loire as well as from further afield. The grape seems to suit Irish tastes, and Bubble Brothers are delighted to encourage and develop this growing enthusiasm.

    Cahors wine and Neufchatel cheese

    Marie de Metz Noblat, author of the French blog Fromagium and its English version Caseophile, suggested a very interesting and unusual pairing between a cheese and a Cahors wine, the Neufchatel double heart cheese: "However with a “double heart” cheese …one so mature it has in fact lost its heart, a fairly heavy red wine is necessary to challenge the strength of the cheese. I recall a first rate tasting session of a big hearted cheese together with a Cahors wine … a real feast!"

    Cahors wines recommended worldwide for the holidays

    The Holiday Season is getting really close now and we're all thinking about sharing meals and wines with friends and family. A little tour on the Internet allowed me to gather some recommendations from bloggers or journalists for the coming holidays. I was happy to see that the wines of Cahors and its star-grape the French Malbec were widely recommended.

    Journalist China Millman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had dinner in a lovely place, Dinette. On the wine list she saw a bottle of Mission La Caminade 2006, perfect to match the simple fare of the restaurant.

    Blogger Lynda Larch from Larchmont, NY spotted bottles of Château de Gaudou 2008 in a wine store, called Le Shop. Lucky New Yorkers!
